Altarpiece for Korso church

When I first studied the church in the spring of 2005, my first and only idea was to produce an electronic piece for the space. One reason was the modern architecture of the church hall and building; another was the spirit of the parish, which clearly supported new ideas.

Using a moving picture in church has been a thought-provoking challenge, as there are very few models for it. As I understand, this is the first of its kind in Finland. I quickly realised that the picture cannot be very narrative, it cannot be a cinematic story but rather must bring to mind timeless motion - such as the flow of water, the flame of a candle etc.

Installation work: Korso Since the piece is used around Christmas, I chose snowfall as the visual starting point. The piece displays letters, slowly falling down as snow flakes. The picture is as detailed and abstract as any natural phenomenon. At the same time, the letters falling randomly form single words or word pairs related to the message of Christmas in the Gospel according to Saint Luke. Every now and then, they appear, only to dissolve back into the snowfall of letters. I am happy to discuss with a church representative as regards which words actually appear. The basic piece is in black and white, but the church colours of Christmas may be used in the letters.

The working title of the piece is "In the beginning, there was the word”, the first sentence from the Gospel according to Saint John. Together with the Book of Genesis, it has been one of the Bible passages that have most puzzled my mind.
