Painting above: Rivers of Communication, oil, 2000

Our environment is full of information. We are currently producing it in unprecedented quantities. By measuring, testing and creating new concepts we are trying to comprehend the mechanisms of nature and also our own behaviour. Modern scientific thought has made people's lives easier, has raised life expectancy, but it has also created a new kind of suffering.

For the first time we have confronted the fact that development under the conditions hitherto prevailing is possible only up to a certain point. With our present methods man can only live a limited time; the population explosion, pollution and radiation constitute a threat to our existence.

Energy is an ability to manipulate information. The essential in nature is contained in the knowledge of how elements can be combined. A tiny virus is able to destroy a mass billions of times larger than itself, only by insinuating itself inside the other's codes and confusing its defence mechanisms.

Similarly, mechanisms created by humans are sensitive to small discrepancies. An amusing aspect of this is that, as soon as something does not work, it is our instinct to increase disorder. When a machine breaks down we shake it or aim a kick at it. When our brain does not work, we slap our forehead, behind which, presumably, the creative forces in the brain are housed.
